FAQ
Questions we actually get asked.
Anything not covered here, email hello@pageplayers.com and we'll answer it.
What age is it for?
Recommended for ages 8 and up. Kids 6+ can join the fun with an adult around in case they get stuck. The story's safe for all ages, with just a few light-hearted pirate nods to rum and sword fights. Grown-ups tend to have as much fun as the kids.
Is this a Choose Your Own Adventure book?
No. Those rely on short branching paths and a lot of abrupt endings. Page Players tells one continuous story designed to unfold over several hours. You make decisions about where to go and how to solve challenges, but everyone ultimately experiences the same core narrative — so the story can be deep and emotionally satisfying, more like a novel than a flowchart. And you never have to restart after a wrong choice.
How do I actually move through the book?
You don't pick from a list of options. You explore the full-page illustrations. Each one contains numbers on doors, paths, ladders and cave mouths — flip to that page and you're there. It works like a maze, letting you move forward and backward freely without re-reading long sections of text. There's a playable demo here.
Do I need dice, stat sheets or anything else?
No. No dice, no hit points, no timers, no character sheets, no setup. Just the book and something to write with — or the Bookpack if you'd rather not write at all.
How does the Bookpack work?
It's a reusable tab-based tracker that lives inside the book as your bookmark. Three columns of tabs, one per item code. Collect an item, flip its tab open. Use the item, flip it closed. Nothing to erase, nothing to lose, and it adds just enough gameplay without slowing down the story.
How long does it take to finish?
Several hours for most players, usually across a few sittings. There are countless side quests and hidden easter eggs, so if you're the sort of person who checks behind every barrel, considerably longer.
Can two people play at once?
It's designed as a solo experience, but plenty of people play it as a two-person thing — one holding the book, one arguing about which door to take. That works well. It's also a good read-along for a younger kid and a parent.
Paperback or hardcover?
Same 400 pages either way. The hardcover has a sewn binding that stands up to being flipped through repeatedly, which is exactly what this book asks of it. If it's going to get played more than once, get the hardcover.
Where do you ship?
Worldwide. One shipping charge per order, set by the largest thing in it. Rates are here.
Was any of this made with AI?
The story and gameplay were written and designed by Brett Miller. Every page was hand-illustrated by Paul Nowak in traditional inks and oils. AI tools have only been used to help with grammar and copy editing.
Is there going to be another one?
Yes. Twenty years of story ideas have piled up and Patrick is the first one out. Get on the list and we'll tell you when Game 02 is ready.
